Top-down planning enables setting high level goals to a metric, say Gross Sales Retail and spreading the updated value to lower levels in the hierarchy while keeping penetration (i.e. % of TTL) of each level the same.
Overview
Say you want to grow the total Gross Sales Retail for April by 10%. You likely want to keep the contribution of each level in the hierarchy consistent. Top-down planning and spreading allows you to set the new total for Gross Sales Retail in April and spread the expected sales to each level in the hierarchy proportionally.
See below for how it works in action:
Spread Methods
Set Proportionally
Default Spreading within Toolio happens proportionally over metrics. In the example below:
Attribute | Gross Sales Units |
Total | 300 |
XS | 100 |
M | 200 |
Setting Total to 600, XS would be 200 and M would be 400, i.e. everything would be spreading down proportionally.
Attribute | Gross Sales Units |
Total | 600 |
XS | 200 |
M | 400 |
Set Leaves Equal
Set Leaves Equal uses an alternate spreading mechanism for the given metric, where each leaf (i.e. lower levels) are set to the same value, instead of spreading metrics proportionally.
This could be the desired behavior for certain metrics, e.g. Discount %, Markdown % or Gross Sales AUC. For example, if user inputs Gross Sales AUC of $100, the expected behavior would not be to spread Gross Sales Cost proportionally, but would be to set Gross Sales AUC to $100 at each leaf.
For example, let's assume the following starting position:
Attribute | Gross Sales Units | Gross Sales Cost | Gross Sales AUC |
Total | 300 | $0 | $0 |
XS | 100 | $0 | $0 |
M | 200 | $0 | $0 |
For example, if user inputs Gross Sales AUC of $100, the expected behavior would likely be as follows.
Attribute | Gross Sales Units | Gross Sales Cost | Gross Sales AUC |
Total | 300 | $30K | $100 |
XS | 100 | $10K | $100 |
M | 200 | $20K | $100 |
This can only be achieved by updating the Spread Method on the Metrics configuration under Settings.
