Events are demand-impacting signals — such as promotions, markdowns, stockouts, seasonality shifts, or anomalies — that Toolio automatically detects or lets you define manually. The Events page gives you a single place to view, create, and manage these signals so you can understand what drove historical demand and apply that knowledge to improve your forecasts.
The Events page is located at Settings > Configuration > Intelligence > Events.
Note: Events is controlled by a feature flag and must be enabled for your organization by your Toolio team. If you don't see the Events page in Intelligence, reach out to your Customer Success Manager.
Use Cases
Review automatically detected events to understand what disrupted historical demand — without manual investigation.
Create custom events for known upcoming promotions or markdowns when you already know the expected impact.
Reuse one or more proven historical events for a future planning scenario. Toolio combines their impact into a single recommended value.
Control which demand signals influence your downstream forecasting.
The Events Page
The Events page uses Toolio's familiar Excel-style grid. Each row represents one event — either detected (surfaced automatically by the system) or custom (created by you).
Event Fields
Every event displays the following information:
Field | Description |
Event Name | Unique name for the event, such as DE_0012 |
Source | Whether the event is Detected or Custom. A custom event built from detected events also shows how many, such as "Custom from 3 events" |
Metric | Whether the event was measured in Units or Retail $ |
Event Category | Promotion, Stockout, Markdown / Discount, Seasonality, or Anomaly |
Classification | Direction and strength of the impact, such as High-impact Uplift or Low-impact Drop |
Stockout | Possible Stockout, Stockout, or No Stockout |
Choice | Products associated with this event |
Location | Locations associated with this event |
Filters | The Choice and Location filters that define the event's scope |
Start Date / End Date | Event timeframe |
Impact % | Estimated demand impact as a percentage |
Mean Abs Δ | Average absolute change in demand during the event |
Detected Events
Detected events are surfaced automatically by Toolio based on historical demand patterns. They appear directly in the Events page without any setup required.
Use detected events to quickly identify promotions, markdowns, stockouts, seasonality spikes, or anomalies that influenced past sales.
Each detected event includes:
Impact % and Mean Abs Δ
Event Category, Classification, and Stockout status
Choice and Location scope
Event timeframe
Creating a Custom Event
Click Add Event in the top right of the Events page. You can create a custom event in two ways: from one or more detected events, or by defining it manually.
Option A: Create an Event From Detected Events
Use this option to replicate a proven past event, or to combine up to five related past events into one event. For example, you can combine several weekends of a recurring promotion into one future event.
Click
Add Eventand stay on theFROM DETECTED EVENTtab.Tick one or more detected events in the grid (up to 5).
Review the Summary below the grid. It updates each time you tick or untick an event.
Click
CONTINUE. If the selected events cover more than one channel, Toolio asks you to confirm: "This event consists of multiple channels, and may deteriorate forecast. Are you sure to continue?"Review the prefilled fields:
Name: "Linked to" the first selected event, plus a count of the others, such as Linked to DE_0003 + 1 more.
Impact %: the recommended combined impact. You can change it.
Impact Classification: the recommended classification. You can change it.
Time Frame: the window of the longest selected event. You can change it.
Filters: empty. Add at least one Choice or Location filter to set the event's scope.
Click
CREATE.
The Summary shows one row per selected event and a Recommended row for the combined event:
Column | Description |
Source Event | The detected event's name |
Channel | The channel the event was detected in |
Time Frame | The event's start and end weeks |
Items | Number of choice-location pairs in the event |
Units | Average expected → actual units during the event |
Impact | The event's impact % |
Classification | The event's classification |
Weight | The event's share of the recommended impact |
Selection Rules for Detected Events
If your selection breaks a rule, a red message explains why and CONTINUE stays disabled:
Only detected events can be used. Custom and imported events can't.
Up to 5 events can be combined.
Retail $ events can't be used. Only Units events can.
The events must all be uplifts or all be drops.
Every event must have an impact.
Events from different channels can be combined, but Toolio asks you to confirm first.
How the Recommended Impact Is Calculated
Each event is weighted by its volume: weight = number of choice-location pairs × number of weeks. A larger event counts for more than a smaller one.
Event | Choice-location pairs × weeks | Weight | Expected units | Actual units | Impact |
A | 10 × 2 | 20 | 5 | 8 | +60% |
B | 40 × 1 | 40 | 10 | 11 | +10% |
Recommended | 60 | 8.33 | 10.00 | +20% |
Toolio averages the expected and actual units using the weights, then compares them: 10.00 ÷ 8.33 − 1 = +20%. A simple average of the two percentages would give +35%, which overstates the smaller event.
The recommended classification takes its direction (uplift or drop) from the selected events. Its strength (Low, Medium, or High) is the weighted middle of the selected events' strengths. In the example above, B carries most of the weight, so the result follows B's strength.
The new event keeps a link to each of its source events, and the Source column shows how many it was built from.
Option B: Manual Event Creation
Use this option when you already know the expected impact of an upcoming event.
Click
Add Eventand open theDEFINE MANUALLYtab.Select your Choice filters to scope the event to specific products.
Select your Location filters to scope the event to specific locations.
Enter the event Time Frame (start and end dates).
Enter the Impact %.
Click
CREATEto add the event.
Filtering Events
The Events page includes a unified filter panel for Choice and Location. Filters update the grid immediately, so you can quickly narrow down events to the products and locations you care about.
You can:
Apply multiple Choice filters simultaneously
Apply multiple Location filters simultaneously
Combine Choice and Location filters in a single view
Managing Events
Right-click any event row to edit or delete it. The Source column makes it easy to distinguish system-generated events from ones you created.
Edit
Select Edit to change the event's details, such as its time frame, impact %, classification, or filters. The source events of a combined event can't be changed after it's created.
Delete
Select Delete to remove an event. Deleted events disappear from the grid and no longer influence forecasts. You can delete both detected and custom events.
Forecasting Support
Events are applied to both forecasting workflows:
ML Forecasting uses custom events measured in Units. To apply a detected event to an ML forecast, create a custom event from it (see Option A above). When events overlap, the one with the largest impact applies.
Statistical Forecasting uses every event that has an Impact %, detected or custom. When events overlap, their impacts add together.
Event import is planned for a future release.
FAQs
Can I Delete a Detected Event?
Yes. Right-click the event and select Delete. It's removed from the grid and no longer influences forecasts.
Can I Use Events With Statistical Forecasting?
Yes. Statistical forecasts use every event that has an Impact %, both detected and custom.
How Many Events Can I Combine Into One?
Up to 5. They must all be detected Units events, and they must all be uplifts or all be drops.
Can I Change the Recommended Impact or Classification?
Yes. Both are prefilled as recommendations. You can enter any Impact % and pick any classification before you click CREATE.
Why Can't I Select a Retail $ Event?
Events can only be created from detected events measured in Units. Retail $ events stay visible in the grid but can't be used as sources.
Can I Combine Events From Different Channels?
Yes, but Toolio asks you to confirm first. Combining channels can make the forecast less accurate.
What Does Impact % Represent?
Impact % is the estimated change in demand attributed to the event. A positive value indicates a demand lift; a negative value indicates a demand drop.
What Is Mean Abs Δ?
Mean Abs Δ (mean absolute change) is the average absolute shift in demand observed during the event window, expressed in units rather than as a percentage.
What Is the Difference Between Choice Scope and Location Scope?
Choice scope defines which products (choices) the event is associated with. Location scope defines which stores or distribution centers are included. Both are set with filters when you create a custom event.
