ABCXYZ Analysis is a product segmentation tool that classifies every choice in your assortment across two dimensions simultaneously. The ABC dimension ranks choices by a performance metric (such as sales or units) — A choices drive the most value, C choices the least. The XYZ dimension ranks choices by demand predictability — X choices have stable, consistent demand, Z choices are highly variable and unpredictable. Each choice receives a combined ABCXYZ ranking (AX, AY, AZ, BX, BY, BZ, CX, CY, or CZ) that tells you both how much it contributes and how reliably it sells.
Results surface as a selectable column on the Line Plan grid so you can sort, filter, and act on the segmentation within your existing planning workflow.
Use Cases
Prioritize depth of buy on high-value, predictable choices (AX, BX) and reduce exposure on low-value, erratic ones (CZ).
Guide assortment rationalization by identifying persistent CZ and CY choices that add complexity without proportional return.
Set differentiated safety stock or reorder policies by segment — AX choices can run leaner than AZ or BZ.
Compare segments across seasons or channels to understand how your portfolio mix is shifting over time.
Setting Up an ABCXYZ Configuration
Configurations are managed in Settings → Intelligence. Each configuration is a named set of parameters that defines how Toolio scores and classifies your choices. You can create multiple configurations — for example, one scoring by sales and another by units — and each surfaces as its own set of columns on the Line Plan.
Note: ABCXYZ Analysis is gated behind the isAbcxyzEnabled feature flag. Contact your Customer Success Manager if you don't see it in Settings.
Creating a Configuration
Navigate to Settings → Intelligence and open the ABCXYZ section.
Click
ADDto open the configuration dialog.Fill in the fields described below.
Click
Save.
After saving, the configuration immediately enters Generating status while Toolio runs the first analysis.
Configuration Fields
Field | Description |
Name | The identifier for this configuration. It becomes the column name on Line Plan (e.g., a config named "Sales ABCXYZ" appears as the "Sales ABCXYZ" column). Must be unique across all configurations. Keep names short and descriptive. |
Granularity | The level at which choices are scored. Currently Choice-level. |
Metric | The KPI used to rank choices for the ABC dimension — for example, Total Sales or Total Units. |
Act / Plan | Whether to score against actual data or plan data. Currently, only Actual data is supported. Plan data support is planned for a future release. |
Time Frame | The date range over which the metric is measured. |
Update Cadence | How frequently Toolio recalculates the analysis, expressed in weeks. The minimum cadence is weekly. |
ABC Definition | The percentage thresholds that define the A, B, and C buckets. Values must sum to 100%. For example, A = 70%, B = 20%, C = 10% means the top 70% of metric contribution is classified as A. |
Partition (optional) | Group your assortment by an attribute before scoring. When set, ABC ranking runs independently within each partition group. For example, partitioning by Department means a choice is ranked A, B, or C relative to other choices in its department — not against the full assortment. |
Product Hierarchy (optional) | Limit which products are included in the analysis. Choices outside the selected hierarchy are excluded from scoring. |
Population Filter (optional) | Additional filters to refine which choices are scored — for example, filtering to a specific Season or Channel. |
Editing a Configuration
Right-click any configuration in the list and select Edit. Changes take effect on the next recalculation cycle based on the configured update cadence.
Deleting a Configuration
Right-click the configuration and select Delete, then confirm. Deleting a configuration removes its columns from the Line Plan.
Configuration Status
Each configuration in the list displays a status indicator:
Status | Indicator | Meaning |
Generating | Amber dot | The analysis is currently running. Results are not yet available. |
Ready | Green dot | Results are available and columns are populated on Line Plan. |
Failed | Red dot | The analysis encountered an error. Contact support if the status does not recover on the next cadence. |
The list also shows the date and time the analysis last ran under Last Triggered.
How XYZ Grades Are Calculated
XYZ grades are determined by the coefficient of variation (CV) of a choice's demand over the configured time frame. CV measures how much demand fluctuates relative to its average — a choice with steady weekly sales has a low CV, while one with large swings has a high CV.
CV = standard deviation ÷ mean
Grade | CV Range | Demand Pattern |
X | CV ≤ 0.5 | Stable, predictable demand |
Y | 0.5 < CV ≤ 1.0 | Moderate variability |
Z | CV > 1.0 | High variability, difficult to forecast |
The XYZ thresholds are fixed and cannot be configured.
Viewing ABCXYZ Results on Line Plan
Once a configuration has a Ready status, its columns are available to add to your Line Plan view.
Open Assortment Plan and navigate to Line Planning.
Open the
View Selector.Search for the configuration name. Each configuration adds one column — the combined ABCXYZ ranking (e.g., AX, CZ) — named after the configuration.
Add the column and apply the view.
You can sort and filter by ABCXYZ columns the same way you sort and filter any other attribute column.
FAQs
What do the ABC grades mean?
ABC grades rank choices by their contribution to the metric you selected (e.g., sales revenue). A choices are in the top tier — they generate the most value. B choices are in the middle tier. C choices are in the bottom tier. The exact thresholds are set in the ABC Definition field when you create the configuration.
What do the XYZ grades mean?
XYZ grades rank choices by how predictable their demand is. X choices have stable, consistent demand that is easy to forecast. Y choices have moderate variability. Z choices have highly erratic demand that is difficult to predict.
What does the combined ABCXYZ grade mean?
The combined grade tells you both a choice's value tier and its predictability in two letters. For example: - AX — high value, highly predictable: your most reliable, important choices. - CZ — low value, highly unpredictable: choices that add planning complexity with limited return.
Can I have more than one ABCXYZ configuration?
Yes. You can create multiple configurations — each with a different metric, time frame, or ABC definition. Each configuration appears as its own column on Line Plan so you can compare segmentations side by side.
Why is a choice showing no ABCXYZ grade?
A choice will not receive a grade if it is excluded by the Product Hierarchy or Population Filter settings on the configuration, or if the analysis has not yet completed (status is Generating).
The status shows Failed — what should I do?
A failed analysis will retry on the next scheduled cadence. If it remains in a Failed state after the next update, contact your Customer Success Manager with the configuration name.
